Fourth Grade Benchmarks (March)

Reading
  • Students will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension on level R/S.
  • Students will read and comprehend grade level texts independently across a variety or genres (fiction and non-fiction).
  • Students must read every night for 30 minutes without interruption to increase reading stamina, fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
  • Students must be able to demonstrate answering short response and extended response comprehension questions using R.A.P method (R – Restate, A – Answer, P – Prove with 2 details).
Writing
  • Students must be able to write an informational persuasive essay following the Teachers College writing process.
  • Students must be able to support reading responses by using text evidence adhering to New York State 2 and 4 point response rubrics.
  • Students must demonstrate grade-appropriate level grammar mechanics and spelling using the conventions rubric.


Math
  • Students must be able demonstrate an understanding of mathematical concepts.
  • Students must be able to divide by 1-digit numbers.
  • Students must be able to identify factors and multiples.
  • Students must be able to find equivalent fractions by multiplying and dividing.
  • Students must be able to compare and order fractions.
  • Students must be able to convert fractions to simplest form.
  • Students must be able to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.
  • Students must be able to rename mixed numbers and improper fractions.
  • Students must be able to solves problems in multiple ways and explain solutions.

Social Studies
  • Students must be able to understand how the geography of New York State affects society.
  • Students must be able to understand the influence and contributions of Native Americans on New York State.
  • Students must be able to read and interpret current events.
  • Students must be able to analyze and interpret a variety of non-fiction texts about the Native American culture.

Academic and Personal Behaviors
  • Students must be able to copy homework assignments within five minutes.
  • Students must be able to bring home all books and notes necessary to complete assignments.
  • Students must be able to keep their desks, folders, and notebooks organized.
  • Students must persist through challenges to complete a task by trying different strategies.
  • Students must ask for help when needed.
  • Students must be able to work independently and in small groups.
  • Students must respect school rules and work well in the school community.
