Welcome to our Pre-K Family at PS 212!
This is the year for our youngest learners to shine brightly in our classrooms. It will be a year of magical wonder and amazing growth for your little star. We are looking forward to working with you and your child as we teach them to reach for the stars. So many great things will happen in our classrooms. This year we hope to prepare your child emotionally, socially, and academically in a positive and nurturing environment.
In Pre-K we learn through play and we will have so much fun! In Pre-K we will be focusing on many different themes. This year we are starting a new program, Creative Curriculum, that will help us explore many different topics. We do most of our learning through centers, so your child will get to experience such things as dramatic play, blocks, library, art, science, and more!
We will be using Fundations to help build the foundational literacy skills your child will need for the rest of their schooling. Fundations is a very small, but important part of our day as it introduces the letters and the sounds to our students in a hands-on way. The Fundations activities are not meant to be mastered but are merely an introduction to skills they will need in Kindergarten.
In Pre-K we focus on emotions and how to understand them through different Social-emotional programs. We will be using Sandford Harmony, Brain Power Wellness, and Mindfulness as a school.
Here are some things you can do this summer to help prepare your child for Pre-K:
- Begin practicing how to button and unbutton clothing.
- Practice washing hands at home. First wet hands, next add soap, rub hands together for at least 20 seconds, finally rinse with water and dry hands.
- Practice using the toilet properly and wiping correctly. They will need to be able to do this on their own at school.
- Show them how to open and close their backpack.
- Show them how to open and close their water bottle. We recommend using a reusable water bottle that is easy to open and close.
We suggest setting up a daily routine that prepares your child for Pre-K. They should be waking up each morning, getting dressed, and having breakfast. There should be playtime both inside and outside everyday. Your child should go to bed at a reasonable time. A Pre-K child needs 12-13 hours of sleep each day so we suggest a bedtime of no later than 7:30-8pm.
We are looking forward to our Pre-K adventure with your child and family. Pre-K will be the beginning of a wonderful school experience.
Looking forward to meeting you,
Your Pre-K Teachers
