Fifth Grade Benchmarks (March)
Reading
  • Students must be reading at a level U/V or higher.
  • Students must be able to summarize and retell important parts of a story
  • Students must be able to differentiate between fact and opinion and cause and effect.
  • Students must be reading 40 minutes independently with an increase of an additional 10 minutes every other month.
  • Students must use appropriate language when using different reading strategies.
  • Students must find text evidence to support their answers across genres including articles, poems and passages.
  • Students must be able to link details in a text to determine theme of a literary text.


Writing
  • Students must use paragraphs, indentation, punctuation and spelling
  • Students must have knowledge of high frequency words.
  • Students must be able to understand figurative language
  • Students must be able to write an informative/ explanatory essay.
  • Students must be able to write narratives including voice
  • Students must be able to write a journalism writing piece using real life experiences and the information gathered using first and second accounts
  • Students must be able to compare two texts, write a response on the common theme(s) and text-based questions

Math
  • Students must be able to apply knowledge of patterns to place decimals in sums, differences, products and quotients
  • Students must be able to problem solve by adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators
  • Students must be able to multiply and divide fractions by fractions, mixed and whole numbers
  • Students must be able to simplify fractions into simplest form
  • Students must be able to read and graph coordinates on a line graph Students must be able to name coordinate pairs
  • Students must be able to multiply and divide by powers of ten

Science
  • Students will be able to identify a claim about ecosystems and use information to write an essay to support the claim.
  • Students will be able to identify patterns of the earth and sky.
  • Students will understand and apply concept vocabulary.


Social Studies
  • Students must be able to understand Pangaea and the coastal route theories
  • Students must be able to compare native peoples
  • Students must be able to use map skills in reading a variety of maps

  • Students must be able to correctly copy information from the board to their notebook
