CLASSROOM MUSIC AT PS 212
Kindergarten
Kindergarten classes will explore music through singing, playing instruments, movement and listening activities. Under the direction of Mrs. Segarra-Stachnik students will be learning the Kodaly Method of singing, through this method Kindergarten students will be able to perform as a class and alone a varied repertoire of music. Kindergarten classes also learn action songs and singing games, through these songs children can develop motor skills and engage in cognitive thinking in a musical environment. Students will develop fine motor skills and engage in movement during "Rhythm Stick" time. Students will learn the songs "The Wizard of Oz", "Sesame Street" and "Music Music"
First Grade
First grade classes will explore music through singing, movement and listening activities. In first grade students will perform simple songs and poems which explore pitched and unpitched instruments such as the xylophone, triangle, hand drum, maraca, cymbal, claves, and guiro. Students will continue learning the Kodaly Method of singing. Students will be learning to sing with the syllables Fa and La in addition to the five syllables they learned in Kindergarten. Students will continue to learn action songs and first graders will play hand clapping games that distinguish between left and right hands this year. Students will develop fine motor skills and engage in movement during "Rhythm Stick" time. Students will also learn proper audience behavior and proper performer behavior. During "Share a Song" time, students are given the opportunity to perform a song from memory for the class. Students who are sitting nicely with hands folded, and listening quietly are praised for "excellent audience behavior"
Second Grade
Second grade classes will explore music through singing, movement and listening activities. In 2nd grade students will perform traditional children's songs. Students in 2nd grade begin sight-reading rhythms including whole, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes. Students also develop ear training by singing rounds and partner songs. Students also begin to explore classical music, and engage in active listening by describing musical elements, and playing along with simplified classical melodies and tunes. During Rhythm band time students sight read whole, half, quarter and eighth notes and rests while they play rhythm instruments. They have the opportunity to play along with the classical music they are learning about.
