Lower Science with Mrs. DelSoldato
PS212Q is using Amplify Science to teach our children to thing like an engineer by designing and carrying out experiments. They will observe, question, and analyze different everyday phenomena. These young scientists use their five senses to explore the world around them. See what kind of scientist your child will be this year and what they will be investigating!

CLASS DOJO:
I will be using the Class Dojo app to reward your child for trying their best during science. When a student earns 10 points, they earn a prize. Class Dojo also has a "Class Story" where I can share pictures and videos of the work your child is doing. Class Dojo also allows for messaging between parents and myself. Feel free to contact me between 8am and 2:20pm with any concerns you may have about science. If you are not already signed up, please follow the steps below to join:
*Download the Class Dojo app or go to wwww. classdojo.com
*Create a parent account
*Search by school for PS212 (NOT ps212q)
*Search for Mrs. DelSoldato
*Search for your child by entering their FULL NAME and request to connect!
See below for an example of what a Class Story post looks like!

Kindergarten Science
Unit 1: Sunlight and Weather: Our students will help two principals figure out why their playgrounds are either too hot or too cold for the children to play. Kindergarteners will become "Weather Scientists" and investigate how the sun warms the earth to help solve this problem.
Unit 2: Pushes and Pulls: Our scientists will investigate what makes an object move through games, stories, and construction vehicles.
Unit 3: Solids and Liquids: Students will investigate the difference in the phases of matter and observe how they can change.
Unit 4: Plant and Animal Needs: Our "Plant and Animal Scientists" will help solve a problem for the children of Mariposa Grove. The children want to know why the Monarch Caterpillars disappeared when the field they loved to play in changed to a vegetable garden. Our scientists will help solve this mystery and figure out how to get them back!

First Grade Science
Unit 1: Sunlight and Weather: Students become "Sky Scientists" and investigate why a boy named Sai and his grandmother see two different skies at the same time. They will learn about the rotation of the earth and its effects.
Unit 2: Lights and Sound: Our first graders are working as "Puppet Engineers" to design a shadow scene for a puppet theater company. The company is struggling to transport all of their heavy supplies so we will help by created a shadow scene and making small, easy to carry instruments to make it easier for them.
Unit 3: Plant and Animal Defenses: The "Aquarium Scientists" in first grade will investigate a problem involving a sea turtle named Spruce. We want to know how Spruce will stay safe when she is released back into the ocean when she has been living in an aquarium.

Second Grade Science
Unit 1: Plant and Animal Relationships: Students will become "Plant Scientists" and explore why the Chalta Tree is no longer growing in the Bengal Tiger Reserve. They will study how plants grow, what they need, and how plants depend on animals to live.
Unit 2: Properties of Materials: Students become "Glue Engineers" and help solve our school's glue shortage problem. They design and test their own glue recipes to make on that matches our design goals for what our school needs.
Unit 3: Changing Landforms: Students become geologists and investigate why a flagpole is moving closer to a cliff. They explore how a landform can change over time.
