Special Programs
Lower Grades:
o Learning Though Leap
Students learn how to read word problems, adjust measurements, and combine fractions while cooking recipes from around the world and producing their
own cookbooks. Teaches basic mathematics concepts and develops multicultural appreciation.
o Junior Chorus
A beginning choral group, consisting of 2nd and 3rd graders. Audition is required.
o Swimming
Students have a swimming instructor for 10 weeks, The swimming classes focused on helping students to have fun while learning how to swim as well as to
develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lifetime. Students are introduce to water safety, basic swimming strokes and swimming techniques.

o Physical Education –Young Runners
Our physical education program incorporates in house and outside resources such as the NYRR programs and Fitnessgram so students will enhance their
fitness levels and awareness. Students in grades 4 and 5 are required to participate in the Fitnessgram Test. As part of their warm-up they are required to
practice components for the test. As part of the Physical Education program there are culminating events such as Field Day where grades compete against each other in fun, cooperative games either at a public park or in the schoolyard. In addition, the 5th grade, attend the annual Jana Hunsaker Memorial Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, which is held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center
Upper Grades:
o Kat Alston Choir
The vocal music program at PS 212 for the academic year 2011 – 2012 consists of working with students in grades K-5. Classes will meet once a week on
Thursday for a total of 35 sessions. Teachers collaborate with the music instructor to identify topic that relate to the curriculum. Together we will research and
identify related songs. Weekly vocal musical instructions combined with relevant classroom lessons throughout the week improve language fluency and
expression. In addition, students learn vocabulary to grade level curriculum. After a period of time, students perform for other classes at the school as well as
for their parents, and community; complete with costumes and movements.
o Zumba
This is a dance and movement class. Taught by professionals students in grades 1st and 4th will experience the rhythmic exercise set to Latin music.
o Boy Scout
A program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

Under the direction of Mrs. Stachnik Music Director, our school has achieved a musical environment that meets the needs of all children. Mrs. Stachnik's ability to
teach students has brought forth a wide variety of instrumental and singing talents.
Our music program consists of the following:
singing techniques, as well as beginning instrumental instruction, including guitar, glockenspiel, Boomwhackers, and percussion.
Holiday Show, and The Spring Musicale.
4th Grade Band
This year’s band, Fancy Pants, will consist of talented 4th graders, playing keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, and more! Instruments, for the most part, will be provided. 5th Grade Band
This year's band is called The Hot Peppers. Auditions are required.
o Additionally
o Interested and talented 3rd graders may request a 5th grade tutor to teach them the basics of keyboard or guitar to prepare them to audition for band in the 4th grade.
o Students in 4th grade who do not make it into a band this year can request to take Beginner Guitar or Beginning Keyboard.
o Two other music groups - The 212 Tappers, and Glee Club – are offered after school as the budget allows.
Afterschool:
o Hanac:
This program is offer afterschool and it provides an enriching environment with curriculum-based educational and recreational activities including: tutorial/homework help, athletics/team sports, dance, arts and crafts and board games.
o Penney Harvest:
The Penny Harvest shows young people they have the ability to make the world a better place by introducing them to the desire of helping others during their formative years. As children help others, they develop their generosity and moral character, and they learn through practice the skills and responsibilities of democratic participation.
